Apricot kernels come from the seed of the apricot fruit.
Apricot kernels are, like most nuts and seeds, very nutritious.Among
the nutrients they contain is one called amygdalin, which is also known
as Vitamin B17.
In the 1970s and 1980s, amygdalin (Vitamin B17 or laetrile) was
extracted from bitter apricot kernels and sold as a treatment for
cancer. Whilst much research has been, and continues to be conducted in
this area, concerns were raised amongst officials regarding toxicity
levels and as such the sale of bitter apricot kernels became restricted.
Tropical Wholefoods supply sweet apricot kernels.
Small amounts of amygdalin are still present in sweet apricot kernels
as they are in almonds and the stones of other members of the genus
prunus family.
Tropical Wholefoods source their sweet apricot kernels from their partners in the Hunza Valley, Pakistan.
Again, much research has been done on the Hunza tribes and
communities. The Hunzas are world renowned for being some of the
healthiest people in the world. As apricot kernels form a staple part
of their diet questions have been raised as to the contribution apricot
kernels makes to their health and longevity.
Sweet apricot kernels do not have the over powering bitter taste
associated with bitter apricot kernels there fore they can be eaten on
their own as a snack. Alternatively, they make a great addition to
muesli or when mixed with honey or yoghurt or they can be blended into
your favourite smoothie.
Tropical Wholefoods recommend that no more than 350g oftheir sweet
apricot kernels are consumed in the one day. This is a recommendation
for sweet NOT bitter apricot kernels.
